On this page you will find some (good) informations about carp fishing in Slovenia - a small country on The Sunny side of the Alps (Julian Alps).
Maybe we do not have waters with alot of BIG Carps, but we do have some interesting waters, which have carps inside, and which are giving us so much pleasure while being in nature, trying to catch & release them - our passion - The Mighty Carp. Modern carp fishing and C&R is present in our territory for a long time and is still growing.
I will try to give you some:
Informations on lakes, ponds and other waters
Informations on record carps
Some pictures and more...
Some carp and historic facts:
Today is The Wild carp in Slovenia considered as an autochthonous species beside cultivated types (common, leather, mirror). In the same time this Wild carp is on the Red list as an endangered species because of the destruction of his spawning habitat and due to river regulations. Presumably The Wild carp is present in our waters at least 1000 years. It is believed that Romans brought him in to our waters while they transported carp for food from Danube area to the Apennine peninsula.
It is also possible that The Wild carp was present in our waters long time before that, because recent excavations at Hočevarica pile dwelling settlement near Ljubljana found remains of carp 5600 years old. They found pharyngeal bone and teeth of common carp which were probably eaten by pile dwellers..
Regulations:
On june 28th this year we got a new Fishing regulations which are very similar to regulations of other EU countries. Finaly there came some news, among them is so long expected - night fishing for carp! Until now, night fishing for carp was not alowed in our waters. There were only few venues until now where more than one fishing rod was praxis and not rarity. I hope that number of this waters will grow up in months to come.
Records:
Not many data and pictures are avaliable to me on this subject at this moment. I hope I will get some of them and publish them as soon as possible. In general we know that in lake Šiker were caught several 30+ kg (not C&R) carps. In Murska Sobota were caught 33 kg carp (not C&R). On lake Ptuj were also caught 30+ kg carps (but not C&R). On lake Bled were caught many around 30 kg, among them 25.5 kg carp and then released. So this is Slo C&R record for common carp so far. You can see this beautiful carp from Lake Bled on picture below
